Here’s the story of why my sculpture has an archeological feel.

In college, I was in the archaeology department. One day my roommate who was studying art came back from class and pointed out to me that there were more girls in the art department. On the strength of that information, I walked right across campus and changed my major. The girls were a mixed blessing, but I developed a life-long love of sculpture – especially ancient sculpture.

What I’ve tried to achieve in my own sculpture is to create a fraudulent antiquity, reminiscent of mythological gods, lost temples, buried secrets, and distant voyages. I’ve combined elements of Mayan and Egyptian art with an art deco or futurist feel. Most pieces are cast as fragments. I’ve always thought that the broken sculptural fragments in museums had a mystery and enigmatic beauty.

The materials I’m using are Papier-mâché, copper, and polyester resin. All pieces are wired to hang and are surprisingly light and durable.

You are invited to listen to my CDs, Fallen Angels and Final Days, at www.cdbaby.com. The sentiments and mood of the music match the images of the sculpture.
